Evaluation of Spatiotemporal Patterns and Water Quality Conditions Using Multivariate Statistical Analysis in the Yangtze River, China

As a crucial surface water resource, the Yangtze River has raised concerns about its quality due to importance in economic and social development, environmental conservation, agricultural development. The principal component analysis (PCA), hierarchical clustering (HCA), index (WQI) were utilized assess overall condition detect spatiotemporal patterns key parameters of River. All usage data determined monthly from samples taken 2021 at 33 monitoring stations. results demonstrated that 85% stations whole maintained “good” condition, with average WQI values ranging 71.16 81.25. was slightly poorer summer, 56.6% being “medium” condition. Spatially, there downward trend upstream downstream. Two significant scores (PCs) produced as result PCA HCA, explaining 60.3% total variance upstream, 67.4% transition zone, 50.4% downstream, respectively. In addition, middle–upper reaches found correlated CODMn, whereas downstream mainly influenced by TUR, TP, T, DO. primarily motivated our understanding River’s status suggested main targets for improvement different areas.
